Eland Hunting Tips

eland hunting

Eland hunting is a challenging and exciting activity that can be a very rewarding experience. It requires patience, a good amount of preparation and dedication to the sport in order to be successful. If done properly, it can also contribute to the conservation of the animal and its natural habitat. Choosing a reputable safari outfitter like Burchell Wolf Safaris can help ensure that your hunt is safe, ethical and enjoyable while contributing to the preservation of Namibia’s wilderness ecosystem.

Elements of a Good Eland Hunt

The best time for eland hunting is in the mornings. This is when the bulls will leave their bedding areas to graze, usually at dawn or just before. Eland are herd animals and will travel in groups with bulls forming small herds while cows join larger herds. Herds will often graze near water sources or favored browse, and they are easy to track as they move between them.

When a trophy eland is located, it can be a challenge to get a clean shot due to their small stature and long legs. A stalking approach may be needed. A vehicle can be used, but the hunter should keep a keen eye on the terrain and check their surroundings frequently in order to avoid detection by the animal.

If a broadside shot is needed, aim for the center of the shoulder, which should hit both heart and lungs for a quick, humane kill. A quartering away shot should be attempted only if the hunter is very proficient at shooting, as this requires the bullet to bisect the angle formed by the front shoulders.
